The former spin bowler will run against Virendra Sharma, the Labour incumbent in Ealing Southall, west London with grand plans of making it all the way to Downing Street.

The 42-year-old told the Daily Telegraph: “I believe neither the Labour Party or the Tories are really helping the working class, and I think I can bridge that gap and make a difference as an MP.

“I have only known George Galloway briefly, but what I do know is that his focus is on reducing the massive gulf between the rich and the poor in Britain.

“The Workers Party of Britain is that voice for the workers, and we will do our utmost to help them.

"I want to be the voice for the workers of this country and my aspiration in politics is to one day become prime minister, where I would make Britain a safer and stronger nation.

"But the first job at hand is to represent the people of Ealing Southall."

Panesar enjoyed a fine career as a cricketer, both for England and at county level, where he performed for Northamptonshire and Sussex before a brief stint with Essex.

He managed 50 Test matches for England, as well as three Ashes series, though he did not play in the 2010/11 edition.

One of England's greatest players, Ian Botham, is a member of the House of Lords with the official title Baron Botham, of Ravensworth in the County of North Yorkshire, after being nominated for a life peerage in 2020 by former PM Boris Johnson.

Meanwhile, Galloway, who won a landslide victory in Rochdale last month to return to the House of Commons, confirmed Panesar's candidacy on Tuesday.

He told LBC: “Monty, of course, was a great left-arm spinner, and so we could do with him."
