Duncan McGuire: Blackburn Rovers still in hunt to sign striker, says Gregg Broughton

Blackburn are still tracking USA international Duncan McGuire after his transfer fell through in January.

Orlando player McGuire has begun the season well for his club, scoring three goals in seven games.

Blackburn director of football Gregg Broughton confirmed the player is in Rovers' sights again.

The administrative error came 12 months after moves for Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien and Rochdale youngster Ethan Brierley also fell through.

Broughton told BBC Radio Lancashire: "You can try to build structures so those things don't occur again, but what you can't allow for is a human error, and this January was a human error. The board know my thoughts on it, and what actions I believe should be taken on the back of that, but it isn't my call as director of football.

"I was with Duncan and his representatives on the evening and the day after and I know how disappointed they were that the move didn't get over the line. I'm also acutely aware how disappointed my recruitment team were after working for three or four months on that deal.

"The hard bit of the deal had been done. The negotiation with his club had been done, the negotiation with the player and his representatives had been done, we had got the player across the line and into the building, so there are no excuses for that."

Broughton said any moves to resurrect the deal, and do other business, this summer are dependent on Rovers securing their Championship status, what budget the owners allow and how head coach John Eustace sees his squad.

Blackburn could also be without Arnor Sigurdsson for the rest of the campaign, with the Iceland forward taking a "nasty knock" while on international duty.

A dramatic downturn in form, with two wins in their last 20, has plummeted Blackburn into danger, with manager Jon Dahl Tomasson leaving after being highly critical of failings in the transfer market.

Broughton said: "There was a period of seven or eight weeks last summer when we weren't able to bring players in to the club, we weren't able to add some of the experience we wanted, and we knew off the back of that there would be challenging moments this season."

He is hoping this summer will be different, saying: "Transfer business over the last 12 months will bring income streams into the club. We had two or three players going out of the club on fees last summer, and since then we've had Adam Wharton leave in the club's record sale [£18m to Crystal Palace] and the David Raya deal will land next summer as well."

Rovers will receive sell-on money from the expected £27m move of their former player Raya from Brentford to Arsenal.

"The board of directors have got to decide how they are going to invest that money and at what level they can do that," said Broughton.

"My recommendation to the board is that we look at investment in four areas - firstly transfer fees, secondly the wage bill, thirdly reinvestment into our academy and infrastructure and finally not to blow it all in one go, have some in case we need to go back again in January and next summer."
